Zoom sur Londres #7 : Bards behind bars
Written by Constance Kampfner on 5 mars 2020
The UK prison system is at breaking point. In the past 30 years it’s population has grown by 70%, meaning that there are currently over 80 thousand adults and children in prison across the UK and as of May 2019, 62% of prison establishments in England and Wales were classified as overcrowded.
Could the arts be an unlikely solution to this problem? Research suggests that inmates who engage in creative activities during their time behind bars are 18% less likely to reoffend.
I chatted to Alex who is a facilitator and director from London. She’s worked in prisons in the UK and abroad – her mission is to bring a bit of relief into the daily grind of prison life through theatre.
