Les coopératives et l’Europe

Written by on 17 juin 2019

Simon Marty and Alexandra Georges-Picot went to the General Assembly of Cooperatives Europe to encounter the biggest actors of cooperatives in Europe and witness how they tackle the great themes of today and tomorrow.

Cooperatives, self-help and the role of the EU

“Governments cannot start cooperatives, only people can.”

Agnès Mathis (General Director of Cooperatives Europe), Susanne Westhausen (Director of KOOPERATIONEN, Vice President of Cooperatives Europe and on the board of the International Cooperative Alliance, ICA) and Todor Ivanov (Secretary General of Euro Coop and Secretary General of Consumer Co-operatives Worldwide, CCW). Together, they spoke about the representation of coops to the EU and European cooperation.

The place of cooperatives in our common future

How do young people define cooperatives?
What challenges do the millennials face?
How do cooperatives respond to these challenges?

Alfonso Aliberti (policy and advocacy team leader at the European Youth Forum), Vendula Couvreur (vice president of Idealist in Czech Republic) and Sebastien Chaillou (representative of the young cooperators in the world).

Renewing democracy with the values of cooperatives

It’s not an accident that cooperatives were born in the nineteenth century. They are the ideal tool for adapting to radical social and economic change because their values are universal and atemporal. I believe that exactly what happened in the nineteenth century should happen today.

Jean-Louis Bancel (chair of Crédit Coopératif, chair of Cooperatives Europe) and Stefania Marcone (Chief International Relations and European Policies of LEGACOOP, an Italian APEX cooperative organisation, representative of the alliance of Italian cooperatives to Cooperatives Europe).

A Europe at multiple speeds and the cooperative answer

Andreas Kappes, (Head of International Relations Department at DGRV, the German Cooperative Apex Organisation), Ed Mayo (Secretary General at Co-operatives UK) and Ünal Örnek (The Central Union of Turkish Forestry Co-operatives ORKOOP, Advisor for Turkish National Cooperatives).
